Elisabeth must be finished with work about now. What should we make for dinner? My own work finished, I head for Crux café. Just as I’m about to arrive, my feet stop dead in their tracks. Elisabeth is hugging someone out front. I quickly hide behind some bushes and peek out from behind.
Elisabeth’s first day staying in my apartment, we went shopping for dinner after having tea.
“Come on, let’s go to the supermarket.” Elisabeth stops putting her things away for a moment to look at a picture. I sneak up behind her and lift the picture to where I can see it. “So this is the famous fiancé, huh.”
The photograph is of Elisabeth with a man. They look like a happy couple, their faces pressed against each other.
“He’s not bad… But I…”
“Give it back!”
“You can’t let him go, can you. If you could, you wouldn’t still be walking around with this.”
“I forgot that it was in my bag!”
“You can’t be serious.”
“I’m serious! He’s forgotten! Totally forgotten! Not even a single trace left of him.”
“That guy… I’m sure that’s him… her fiancé, from the picture.” From my perspective, it looks like they’re in a strong embrace. My eyes start swimming, and I slowly back away. Then, I turn around and go back the way I came.
