Comfort. • Mats Hummels | Poehler |
“Mats, I don't think I can go in.”
Lieke Tennant and Mats Hummels had been sitting in their car for about an hour now. They were waiting for Tate McRaes concert to start. But as Lieke saw more and more people walking by. Anxiety slowly began to take over. So much so, that she was considering not going in at all.
“Hey..” Mats said worried, immediately takings his girlfriends hand. “I'm with you.”
Lieke shrugged silently.
“What if we lose eachother? I can't do this without you.” she whispered.
“Listen, I'm almost two meters long. I will be able to see you everywhere you go.”
“And I knew you were gonna be anxious. So I hope this will help.” he said slowly, grabbing something from the backseat.
“Hey, that's your hoodie.” Lieke said, not fully understanding what he was going for here.
“It is. And from now on it's your comfort hoodie too."
“My comfort....” Lieke looked at him as if he was going crazy.
“I thought that if you felt anxious or if we really lose each other in the crowd, this will maybe help you a little bit. It has my scent and well, you know.. you can basically bury yourself in it.”
He started to laugh and handed Lieke the hoodie.
“Thank you.” she whispered happily, sniffing it quickly. It was indeed his cologne. Her favourite one too.
“Put it on and let's go.” he said, after Lieke had leaned in for a kiss.
Mats was really worried about Lieke sometimes. He hated to see her struggle and feel this way. But he believed, by Liekes response, that even by trying he was doing his best to calm her down. And as they walked hand in hand to the venue, he couldn't help but laugh softly at how big the hoody actually was on Lieke. But it was also hartwarming to see how comfortable and safe she felt in it.
“You okay?” he asked again.
Lieke looked up and nodded.
“Thanks again, Mats.” she smiled.
“Well, I'm not your boyfriend just for the fun times.”
“But mostly.” Lieke smirked.
Lieke had to admit that going to a concert with Mats, was actually such a great experience. He was with her the whole time. She was standing in front of him to whole time. He was holding her one way or another, to make sure she felt okay. It was crowded, Tate was pretty famous, but Mats thumb stroking her hand kept calming her down. So much so, she could actually enjoy looking at the talented singer in front of her.
She loved being there now. She was glad they went in after all.
And eventhough it was a bit hot in Mats his hoodie, she was never gonna take it off.
She felt so incredibly safe with him.
“You feeling good?” Mats asked, his lips touching her ear softly. She turned around in his arms and smiled happily.
“I feel amazing.”
She stood on her tiptoes to give him a quick kiss.
“I'm glad.” he smiled at her.
He really was. He really loved seeing her smile like that. A real, genuine smile.
The following week, Lieke couldn't stop talking about the concert. When Gabriëla, her best friend, and her boyfriend Manuel came over, she had been gossiping the whole time with her.
Manuel and Mats had been watching a soccermatch. But Mats was trying to listen to Lieke. His heart fluttered at the good words she spoke about him.
He felt like he was falling in love so badly with her. Every day just a little more.
“So next time, I can come too?” Mats heard Gabriëla ask.
“Let's make it a doubledate, maybe!” Lieke said excitingly.
Manuel and Mats looked at eachother and were both down for it, obviously.
“I do have to admit guys, if we take you both to a concert. The rest of the crowd won't see anything..” Gabriëla smirked.
“Well, then find a new boyfriend if yours is too tall! Joshua is still looking, babe.” Manuel winked at her.
“Oh no, not Joshua. Not him.” Gabriëla groaned.
Joshua Kimmich and Gabriëla never gotten along so great and since Manuel still played with the boy, he always loved to make jokes about Joshua to Gabriëla.
“He's atleast half our length.” Mats joked, making Gabriëla laugh.
“Yeah, but I'd much rather have Manu then.” Gabriëla answered, scooting over to her boyfriend.
Luckily he still decided to take her in his arms. She stuck her tongue out at him and he shook his head.
Mats, in the meantime, had gazed over to Lieke, who was staring at him all the same. He smiled softly and she smiled back, feeling rather happy with this moment. This feeling.
He winked at her.
“You guys need a room. Or, better yet, do we have to leave?” Manuel came inbetween, completely ruining the moment.
“I swear, if you don't shut up.” Lieke yelled, throwing some cushions his way.
Manuel, being the keeper he was, catched them all.
“You are really no fun.”
“I agree to disagree, Lieke.” Gabriëla shrugged, a smirk forming on her face once again.
“Well..” Lieke clapped back. “I bet he is no better than my man.”
And with those words she stood up and walked out of the room, making all of them laugh out loud.
The rest of the week was fairly silent. Apart from work, Lieke had some time off. Mats had to practice soon again, after a well deserved vacation.
Lieke believed he was packing some stuff now, while she laying down on the couch. Feeling slightly anxious about Mats leaving again, she had grabbed his hoody. Which really worked now. It really made her calm down for some reason.
Apparently so much, she had fallen asleep on the couch with the hoody in her arms.
Mats, who had to film another video with Thomas Müller, hadn't really thought it all out. The hoodie he had given Lieke, was actually his favourite. And eventhough he loved it when she had it on, he also loved to wear it.
And now he couldn't find it anywhere. He didn't know if Lieke had stashed it away, or that she left it at someone's place. But it wasn't in their bedroom. It was nowhere to be seen.
“Babe?!” Mats spoke up. “Lieke?”
No answer came. Mats sighed, grabbed his bagpack and walked downstairs.
There she was, he thought, seeing Lieke on the couch. And there was his hoody too.
Mats almost couldn't bare to wake her up, but something in him really wanted the hoodie. Maybe it also made him feel a bit comfortable. A bit more than he realised.
He sighed, set down his bagpack and crouched down in front of the couch. He softly touched her cheek with his hand, stroking it softly. He could stare at her forever, if he wanted to.
“Hey.” he said softly. “Babe..”
Lieke opened her eyes slowly, being slightly desorientated.
“Hey, you fell asleep.”
“Oh, that wasn't my plan.”
Mats chuckled, still stroking her cheek.
“Listen, I gotta film something with Mülli and I really wanted to bring my hoodie. Is that okay?” he asked.
“Ofcourse, honey.” she smiled genuinly. “I was just calming down and then I fell asleep. But ofcourse you can take it.”
She sat down, placing Mats inbetween her legs. She moved her hands towards his face and made him look up.
“I know that soon you have to go back to Dortmund again, but I am really happy with the time we spend together. And I will be waiting for you every evening to welcome you home.” she spoke.
“I love you, you know that right?” Mats answered, coming a little closer.
She stared into his hazel eyes.
“I love you too. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
As soon as those words left her mouth, she turned red.
“It's a good thing I feel the same about you.” he beamed, pulling her in for a kiss.
“You're gonna overcome the stress. You are gonna overcome every worry in your body. And we're gonna live our happily ever after sooner than you know.” he whispered against her lips. “I love you, so much.”
Without another word, he lifted her up in his arms. She immediately, out of shock, put her legs around his waist.
“What are you doing?!” she screamed, holding onto him tightly.
“I'm showing you how much I love you before I go.” he smirked at her.
It was about thirty minutes later, when Thomas had already called about five times, that Mats had decided to leave. He didn't want to go anymore, if he was being honest. He much rather stayed next to Lieke in bed. But he couldn't.
Lieke watched as Mats dressed himself again, putting on the hoodie he actually managed to take with him when he walked upstairs. This man really was strong.
“When are you coming back?” Lieke asked, leaning with her head on her hand.
“Soon, I hope. But knowing Thomas it will probably take an hour or five. If not more.”
“Will you be waiting here for me?” Mats grinned.
“Well, no not exactly. I will be making dinner.” she laughed, standing up with the sheets wrapped around her.
“Dinner sounds good. Bed after?” he tried.
“Mats. No!” she laughed.
“That's sad.” Mats pouted.
“It's time to go, mister.” Lieke said, grabbing his keys from the nightstand.
“Yeah it is. Time to go.” he quickly grabbed his phone and walked towards the bedroom door.
“Aren't you forgetting something?” Lieke asked.
She was about to hold up his keys, they were already mid-air, when his lips crashed with hers. She started smiling immediately, kissed him back, but pulled him away after a few seconds.
“I meant your keys, dumbass.” she smiled.
“Oh, yeah, ofcourse.” he laughed, turning a little red.
“Now go have fun.” she pushed him towards the door.
“Wait,” Mats said, giving her a quick last kiss. “Now that's better.”
And with that he left, sprinted downstairs and grabbed his bagpack.
Not a minute later Lieke heard the door fell into his lock.
She sat down onto the bed again. Looking at the mess they had made. But she didn't care about it all that. She only cared about the man she had met about three years ago and the same man, she was planning to spend the rest of her life with. She wouldn't know what she would do without Mats by her side. And she definitely never wanted to find out.
